Strength, Balance, and Ease: Why Chair Yoga is for Everyone

Updated: Apr 25

When we think of yoga, we often think of thin mats on the floor and the challenge of getting up and down. But at The Well Balanced Being, we believe that movement should meet you exactly where you are today.

If you’re ready to move your body with care, gently build strength, and improve flexibility while supporting your overall wellbeing, our Chair | Sit & Stretch class is here for you.

What to Expect in a Session

Our Chair Yoga sessions are designed to be a sanctuary of gentle movement. We focus on "functional flexibility"—the kind of movement that helps you reach for the top shelf, tie your shoes with ease, and move through your day with less stiffness.

Here is how we practice:

  • Seated Support: These sessions are chair-based, with most of the practice taking place seated. This provides a stable foundation, allowing you to focus on your alignment and breath without worrying about your balance.

  • Supported Standing: At times, we may come to standing, using the chair for support and balance. This allows us to gently strengthen the legs and improve stability while always having a "safety net" nearby.

  • No Floor Work: There is absolutely no kneeling or lying on the floor. We stay elevated and supported throughout the entire session.

  • Come As You Are: You don’t need "yoga gear" or expensive leggings. No special clothing is required—just wear something comfortable that allows you to move with ease.

The Benefits of Sitting Tall

Chair Yoga isn’t just "easier" yoga; it is a highly effective way to support your nervous system and physical health. By focusing on deep, rhythmic breathing while moving, we help lower cortisol levels and improve circulation. It is an excellent choice for those recovering from injury, managing chronic conditions like arthritis, or simply looking for a more mindful way to stay active.
